How Many Shtreimels Does a Chasid Need?

Non-shtreimel wearers may not be aware of this, but there are different types and categories of shtreimlech (we have touched on this previously, but additional info is presented now).

Chasidim often have multiple shtreimels.

1) Regular shtreimel for Shabbos, Yom tov, etc.

2) Regen (rain) shtreimel, for use during rainy weather (often an old shtreimel assumes this function when it is retired from regular use after a new one is acquired), and humid days, which are allegedly bad for shtreimel fur.

Now we are told that some people get

3) Another shtreimel for travel to places like the Catskills, Florida, and China, to avoid the hassle of shlepping their regular shtreimel there.

4) Many in the younger generation prefer "fringe shtreimels".

5) Shtreimels will always have "minor imperfections".

ב"ה, those that don't wear them are relieved of such needs, and can save $750 US and up.

  1. I assume your point is that Chassidim have a flawed system of values. Okay I agree but what benefit is there in basically stating the obvious. Sadly too many in the Yeshivish velt also need some serious attitude adjustment.

  2. Not all Chasidim wear shtreimels, and, of those who do, not all have multiple shtreimels. The web piece this post is based on emanated from a company that is trying to sell more shtreimels. Keep that in mind. So I won't say that it describes all Chasidim.

  3. Perhaps I need to do some Tshuvah. I've been somewhat critical of the blog when you attack Chassidim in general as I believe that our primary target must remain Chabad. This said, a fellow started coming to the shul I attend during the week and while he's a nice guy, he has all these Chassidishisms(he's a former Munkacz) which I find annoying to say the least. He's in the year for his mother so he davens for the Amud. He finishes when I'm at Goel Yisroel(and I'm not slow) When someone asked him to explain why he goes so fast he gave a very Lomdush answer,"If I go slow I'll start thinking about other things." But it's not just this. He's constantly telling everyone about going to Kivrei Tzaddikim and giving Kvitlach. Look I'm not going to dismiss the esoteric, but first a person has to have the fundamentals down before he delves into Sod. To be sure I don't tell him anything because you have as much chance getting through to such people as to Lubavichers.

  4. Tuvia's 'שיחי sells a baseball cap which prominently says "WEEKDAY SHTREIMEL" on it
and I've seen Chassidim wear it as a parody. At least that one is inexpensive :)

Personally I think the Chassic communities should enact guidelines limiting the amount/cost of shtreimels. That would save many of them much heartache. Thyve done such things regarding engagement rings.

    1. If I recall correctly, some have tried to take action in the past about the shtreimels.
